I have a personal photo album that I’ve had on my night stand for years. It contains photos of me when I was a baby, photos of different times in my life, my friends and my families. At the very front of the album is a professional photo taken of me when I was a one year old. At the time, my family was extremely poor. If they could afford meat once a week, that would be consider a good week. Most of the time, it was just rice and sweat potatoes. How they manage to afford a portrait session for me is beyond me. I suspect my parents must have saved up quite a bit or starved. I hope it’s not the latter, but either way, I’m very grateful.
Having beautiful, organic, and artistic portraits that truly reflected who I was at a certain period of time meant a lot to me. To me, great portraits are legacy pieces that are more valuable than anything else I own. Everything in my apartment will probably be replaced 5-7 years from now, but nothing can ever replace the memories that are imprinted in the photos. If those photos are lost, no one can rewind time to take more photos.
Five years from now, no one can rewind time to take a photo of who you are today either. Life moves on, and sometimes all too quickly. You have to choose to document this time in your life or risk forgetting those memories.
